DIEP Flap
Similar to the free TRAM flap procedure, the DIEP flap uses the patient's own tissue to reconstruct a new breast. At his Los Angeles clinic, Mossi Salibian M.D. utilizes this technique as an alternative to breast enhancement using saline or silicone breast implants.
What is a DIEP flap?
The DIEP flap is a free flap of skin, blood vessels and fat. Unlike the free TRAM flap, the DIEP flap uses no abdominal muscle. The tissue is attached to the chest, optimizing the blood circulation in the newly reconstructed breast; allowing shaping and contouring to match your opposite breast. In addition to reconstructing the breast, the contour of the abdomen is often improved much like a tummy tuck.
The DIEP flap procedure is only slightly more complicated than the free TRAM flap procedure, yet they can both be performed in about the same amount of time. Recovery time is almost identical with both procedures.
Dr. Salibian is well-recognized for his work on patients who are recovering from breast cancer or those that require revisions due to botched or unsatisfactory results from previous cosmetic and/or reconstructive surgeries. He has established himself as a trusted specialist in the Los Angeles breast reconstruction surgery field.
