Dr. Salibian uses the injectable SCULPTRA, for clients affected by facial wasting. Facial wasting or lipoatrophy affects a significant number of patients with HIV and specially those who were on some of the earlier generation HIV medications. Although the science of HIV treatment has made astounding strides in the past several decades, new side effects and conditions have surfaced as a result of some of the newer treatments albeit more effective against the virus and in maintenance of a healthier immune system and overall lifestyle. Patients with HIV have a specific type of lipoatrophy called lipodystrophy which can affect the facial, central (truncal), extremity and internal organs.
SCULPTRA is FDA approved to correct facial wasting and facial lipodystrophy. Until recently there were not many reliable treatments for individuals suffering from facial wasting. However, in 2004 the FDA approved Sculptra specifically for the treatment of this condition in HIV patients.
SCULPTRA is made of poly-L-lactic acid. This is a biocompatible substance, meaning it is not toxic and will not cause harm to the body. This is of special importance to HIV patients whose immune system is already compromised. Unlike other injectable fillers, SCULPTRA does not require an allergy test and a subsequent 30-day waiting period. Dr. Salibian will inject Sculptra in small amounts underneath the skin level in areas that appear hollow, such as at the mid cheek level below and around the cheek bones. This procedure is done at the office with a local nerve block to anaesthetize the face in combination with an anesthetic cream. There is minimal down time and pain post injection. The post procedure swelling and redness improves within 24 to 48 hours and the product begins to stimulate tissue growth at the areas of injections in the ensuing weeks to months.
It will take a series of about three to six sessions to achieve an acceptable correction but sometimes even more depending on the degree of facial wasting as well as to the way the tissues respond to the product. The whole process is a gradual improvement that will become obvious as the months progress. Thereafter, you may need one or two touch-up treatments per year to maintain the results.
During your consultation Dr. Salibian will discuss the necessary details about the procedure based on your specific needs and desires. He will also discuss the available alternatives to treat the appearance of facial wasting as well as their successful use for cosmetic improvement of areas of facial hollowing or depressions.
